about

At the start of lockdown, society was weirdly turned upside down. There was a real appreciation for those who saw us through. It was a notable and welcome contrast to the “old norm”. Lyrically I wanted to poke this contrast between the rich, disaster capitalist political class, and the everyday, often underpaid and undermined workers who were now apparently "key". The 6/8 time signature evokes a sense of urgency and incompleteness of the verse / chorus, which moves into a more reflective middle eight (4/4) which ponders that real societal lessons are unlikely to be learned, which I think is already becoming apparent. Tom Robinson played it on his BBC 6 Music Mixtape show (May 10th).

lyrics

The best education
Put you on your feet
And with the right connections
You took an empty seat

A nanny for your children
A chauffeur driven car
But in a global crises
We know who the heroes are

Who’s gonna teach our kids?
Who’s gonna make us well?
Who’s gonna help the old?
Who’s gonna stack our shelves?

You took a brave decision
To bet against the grain
A pin point incision
Profit from other’s pain

You made a tidy killing
While others fought the war
But come the revolution
We know who the heroes are

Who’s gonna teach our kids?
Who’s gonna make us well?
Who’s gonna help the old?
Who’s gonna stack our shelves?

Who’s gonna drive the vans?
Who’s gonna pick our crops?
Who’s gonna keep the peace?
Who’s gonna serve in shops?

When the war is won
Hero’s go unsung
Normal life returns
Lessons never learned

Jim Pearson UK

"You never can be sure what kind of project Jim will come up with next, but you can always be sure it's gonna be pretty darn good." Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music.

Jim's songs range from the whimsical to some of the most bitter and somber themes, yet always with a paradoxical childlike spirit that meets them head-on – wide-eyed and full of hopeful energy.
