about

Why write a song about football when you hate football? Well, it’s a metaphor innit. Another song whose words were written on last year's summer holidays. I was picturing a Stanley Mathews / Gary Lineker hybrid character, and of course, myself as the aging player, eschewing fame and fortune for home comforts, facing reality as he nears the winter of his usefulness.

lyrics

A promising junior with instinctive sense
Cool in the box and strong in defence
Excelled in phys ed but not academia
A natural in shorts but no encyclopedia

His local FC made him part of the squad
When he ran out on the pitch he felt like a god
The dazzling floodlights the roar of the crowd
The sound of the whistle when he’d done himself proud

It’s the end of the game
The end of the game
Life will go on but it won’t be the same
As he pulls on a shirt without number or name
It’s not the end of the world
Just the end of the game

Not for the money, the girls or the fame
He had no ambition to become a household name
‘Cos leaving his hometown would have been such a drag
When his childhood sweetheart turned into a WAG

It’s the end of the game
The end of the game
Life will go on but it won’t be the same
As he pulls on a shirt without number or name
It’s not the end of the world
Just the end of the game

So he hangs up his studs for the very last time
He knows getting old’s not a punishable crime
But the tackles come harder he has to admit
And the clubs latest signings are as young as his kids

It’s the end of the game
The end of the game
Life will go on but it won’t be the same
As he pulls on a shirt without number or name
It’s not the end of the world
Just the end of the game

about

Jim Pearson UK

"You never can be sure what kind of project Jim will come up with next, but you can always be sure it's gonna be pretty darn good." Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music.

Jim's songs range from the whimsical to some of the most bitter and somber themes, yet always with a paradoxical childlike spirit that meets them head-on – wide-eyed and full of hopeful energy.
