about

All Fall Down is written around a mid tempo heavy funk riff that I set on a 16 bar loop and jammed along to, layering guitar parts over and over. This is composing a la Talking Heads’ Remain In Light, and is spontaneously super fun. Often as not these sorts of tracks remain as unfinished instrumentals, but the melancholy refrain All Fall Down became part of the jam, seeping from my personal psyche and that of a nation in the throes of pandemic. Verse one is repurposed from a song I had been writing for Scaredycats last year that seems unlikely to see the light of day (and which in itself was repurposed from my book Fifty Somethings). I found verse two trawling through unused lyrics and the mid eight is also lifted from an unfinished Scardy’s song… it all seems to fit with a common thread of a curiously dystopian/utopian outlook. I have no qualms in revising and upcycling my own work.

lyrics

Some of us can wait, are happy to contemplate
Relishing in nothingness, meandering through wilderness
Thankful for the birds and bees, taking no more than our needs
Given to abstraction, withdrawal and inaction

Some of us dictate, can’t abide to be there late
Nothing worse than idleness, got to get down to business
Can’t see the wood for trees, or conflict between chalk and cheese
Driven to distraction, by percentages and fractions

We all fall down

Nature versus nurture. Science versus fiction
The past versus the future. Trust versus suspicion
Bliss versus ignorance. Aggression versus self defence
Analogue v digital. Rational or spiritual

We all fall down

There’s a drop in the ocean
There’s a needle in the hey
There’s a unanswered question
That won’t go away

There’s a view from a window
There’s a shadow on the wall
There’s a standing ovation
Before the curtain call

We all fall down

about

Jim Pearson UK

"You never can be sure what kind of project Jim will come up with next, but you can always be sure it's gonna be pretty darn good." Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music.

Jim's songs range from the whimsical to some of the most bitter and somber themes, yet always with a paradoxical childlike spirit that meets them head-on – wide-eyed and full of hopeful energy.
