When I kissed you

When I kissed you
On a lazy summer day you put me in the shade
With the sunlight in your eyes it took you by surprise
When I kissed you
We all know that feeling
When life has special meaning
I lost all my self-control
When I kissed you
I couldn’t resist you
I thought you’d understand when I held you in my hands
But like a gunshot to my head I knew that our friendship was dead
When I kissed you
We all know that feeling
When life has lost it’s meaning
I gave you my heart and soul
When I kissed you
And oh how I miss you
So-rry for my mis-de-mea-nour
Please for-give a first off-en-der
I thought you were going to aide and abet
But you didn’t even suspect
I’d fallen in love with you
We all know that feeling
When life has special meaning
I gave you my heart and soul
When I kissed you
I couldn’t resist you

Miss September 1983

Miss September 1983
I remember when I found a playboy magazine
I fell in love with Miss September 1983
I lost a little innocence to her that day
She looked at me with tenderness I looked at her in the same way
What happened to that girl?
She woke up my anticipation and revere
Intoxicated by her glamorous veneer
No other girl has ever measured up to her
I still remember every picture every pose and every curve
What happened to that girl?
She flowered like a rose
Even former centrefolds must grow old I suppose
What happened to that girl?
And what did she become?
She was somebody’s daughter now she could be someone’s mum
As I grew older I could not resolve my dreams
So I collected vintage adult magazines
I never found the girl who liberated me
Was Miss September just an adolescent fantasy?
What happened to that girl?
I love her to this day
Even though her photographs have faded all away
What happened to that girl?
She flowered like a rose
Even former centrefolds must grow old I suppose

Sixteen years

Sixteen years
I used to worry while she was gone
She went out shopping said she wouldn’t be gone long
But sixteen years have passed me by
Since they found me guilty because I didn’t have an alibi
When she came back they set me free
I got a pardon but I got no apology
But after sixteen years dependency
The only place I call my home is in the penitentiary
I begged forgiveness from above
Before I shot the only girl that I will ever love
I waited for the cops and handed them my gun
I said “take me back to prison boys, ‘cos justice must be done”
Finally they’ve come to shave my head
For sixteen years I waited to be dead
So bury me next to the girl who caused so much pain
And write this on my headstone “she will never leave my side again”

Eskimos

Eskimos
Hey all you Eskimos you’d better learn to swim
Your time is running out the tide is coming in
When all your icicles have melted in the sun
You’ll have to take your fur coats off and put your sun cream on
It could be you it could be me
No one is diminished of responsibility
It could be me it could be you
We put our lives on credit now the payment’s over due
We’re sorry and we’re glad
You had the thing we really had to have
A little black under white
To satisfy our energetic appetite
Remember when the drinks were cold
And frozen food did not go old
I used to love a snowball fight
Jack Frost’s graffiti overnight
We turned the heat up by degrees
And brought our planet to her knees
We left here like a cheap hotel
We trashed the rooms and bid farewell
Hey all you Eskimos get ready for the fun
You’ll have to take you fur coats off and put your spacesuits on
Hop aboard the mother ship and wave the world goodbye
We’re gonna trade in mother earth for igloos in the sky
It could be you it could be me
No one is diminished of responsibility
It could be me it could be you
We put our lives on credit final payment’s over due

The dumb dum song

The dumb dum song
When you’ve painted yourself in a corner
Do you ask yourself why?
If you’re standing in the pouring rain and you predicted sun
Just put on your sunglasses and sing the dumb dum song
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
You can’t stop yourself growing older
No matter how hard you try
If you wake up at a party and your friends are all gone
Just pour yourself another drink and sing the dumb dum song
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
If your life hasn’t turned out the way you had planned
And people use words that you don’t understand
If you don’t want to join you just want to belong
Well this is your song
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
Dumb de dum
When you’ve painted yourself in a corner
Do you ask yourself why?
If you know your destination but the journey’s too long
You can make yourself feel better when you sing the dumb dum song

Mary and me

Mary and me
Mary and me
Fell in love by the sea
On a family holiday
But it wasn’t to be
After only a week
We kissed and she flew away
Her parents said we were too young
For such romantic carry-on
And so we went our separate ways
After just seven sunny days
Mary and me
Fell in love by the sea
On a family holiday

Just look after yourself

Just look after yourself
I tried to take your hand
And look you in the eyes
You said you couldn’t stay with just one man
For the remainder of your life
You’ve got so many things to do
And places yet to see
I wasn’t good enough for you
You were good enough for me
Just look after yourself don’t worry about me
I went down on my knees
And begged a second chance
We couldn’t sing in the same key
And I never learned to dance
When she planted her last kiss
It tasted bitter sweet
I wish it hadn’t come to this
But I walked away on two left feet
Just look after yourself don’t worry about me
You can’t go on this way losing all your friends
You may come back one day when you have no other better plans
You can’t go on this way using all your friends
If you aren’t here with me you will be in someone else’s hands
Just look after yourself don’t worry about me

The Rendezvous Café

The Rendezvous Café
Outside the Rendezvous Café I held her hand
She couldn’t wait to get away across the low tide silver sand
I climbed the rocks so I could see her go
My heart was beating like a rodeo
And the seagulls cried in sympathy
But I don’t need her if she don’t need me
I’m walking alone along memory lane
It’s the place I go nearly every day
I am waving goodbye my absentee
I never loved her like I love her memory
Outside the Rendezvous Café I make a stand
Eating an ice cream on a cloudy day and building castles in the sand
I trace the patterns that we never made
I gave away the gifts she never gave
And turn my back on a northern sea
I don’t need her if she don’t need me
I’m walking alone along memory lane
It’s the place I go nearly every day
I am waving goodbye my absentee
I never loved her like I love her memory

Waiting for nothing

Waiting for nothing
She cooks his tea and serves it to the bin
She doesn’t have to wait to know that he’ll be late again
She has a conversation with the TV screen
She can’t resist the gentle kiss of nicotine
She’ll never be unfaithful to her oldest friend
They’ll see it through together to the end
Waiting for nothing
Is such a lonely ride
Feeling good inside
Now there’s nothing to hide

People can change

People can change
We must be living in a shooting gallery
I take pot-shots at you you take pot-shots at me
I hit the target but I didn’t get a prize
I was sad to see the tears were welling in your gorgeous eyes
So I sit on the round-a-about and watch you on the slide
I think I love you but I really can’t decide
Too many contradictions spinning in my head
I found the answer in a fortune cookie this is what it said
People can change and they often do
There’ll always be someone with an opposite view
You just re-arrange an opinion or two
If some people change then so can you
We’re on a journey but we do not need a guide
Just trust your intuition and the way you feel inside
You’ll never find the answers blaming someone else
You can’t expect to change the world but you can change yourself
You don’t have to love the things you hate
Just close your mouth and tolerate
Open your mind its not too late
Use your imagination
It doesn’t matter what you own
We’re only made of skin and bone
You’re going to find you own way home
And very soon you’ll learn
You only get one chance
And its your turn
People can change and they often do
There’ll always be someone with an opposite view
You just re-arrange an opinion or two
If some people change then so can you

"You never can be sure what kind of project Jim will come up with next, but you can always be sure it's gonna be pretty darn
good." Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music.
Jim's songs range from the whimsical to some of the most bitter and somber themes, yet always with a paradoxical childlike spirit that meets them head-on – wide-eyed and full of hopeful energy.
